A new association to promote the interests of Ireland’s growing Moldovan community was launched in Dublin on 31st August. The Moldovan Association of Ireland will represent the interests of approximately 5,000 Moldovans living in Ireland in areas such as business, culture and social integration.

Moldova Vision has a strong commitment to strenghtening relations between Ireland and Moldova. As part of this work, we have fostered the emergence of a Moldovan Association in Ireland and were very proud to be involved in the Association launch on 31st August. The launch event was a Celebration of Moldovan Independence Day and was held at the Teacher's Club, Parnell Sqaure, Dublin 1. Highlights included welcoming speeches by Ms. Elena Secas, Labour candidate for the 2009 local elections in Limerick and Mr. Vladimir Sacagiu, First Secretary from the Embassy of the Republic of Moldova in London. Traditional Moldovan wine and food was served, along with music from a live band. The day was a great success and very enjoyable for the 150 guests who attended. For photos click here...

Speaking at the launch, Elena Secas, who is the first Moldovan person to stand for election to public office as a councillor in Ireland said:

“Like Ireland, Moldova is a small country and Moldovan people have emigrated to many parts of the world. I believe that this new Association will help to give a voice to Moldovan people in Ireland who may not be as well known as other immigrant groups.

Moldovan immigrants work in a wide range of jobs and make a valuable contribution to economic life in Ireland. The Moldovan Association will promote the interests of all Moldovan nationals in the country and I also hope that it will help to develop stronger relations between Ireland and Moldova.”
